If you drink the living water Christ gives you, you will never thirst again
You will be forever satisfied
He becomes a gushing fountain, flooding you with endless life
John 4:1-10 (NIV)
1Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John—
2 although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples.
3 So he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee.
4 Now he had to go through Samaria.
5 So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph.
6 Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.
7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink”?
8 (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food).
9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans).
10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water”.
…Jesus makes a profound statement here. He looks at the woman and says, ‘Please give me a drink.’ Jesus, the visible image of the invisible God, Creator of heaven and earth. All things were made through Him, and by Him.
In Psalms 8, David says: ‘What is man that you are mindful of him…’ David is telling God, ‘I am just a mere man and you are thinking of me.’ Jesus didn’t need anything from this woman. He is the One who caused water to gush forth in the wilderness. Although He did not need anything from her, He wanted something from her. He didn’t need her water. He didn’t need the well. Instead, He wanted her worship. He wanted her life to be fully devoted to Him. He is asking this woman to pour out her spirit, her worship upon Him.
John 4:23-24 (NIV): ‘Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth’.
There is no alternative. Those who worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and in truth. There is no choice in the matter. This is not two kinds of worship, but two aspects of worship. To worship Him in Spirit means to worship Him in harmony with the nature of God, who is Spirit. To worship Him in truth is to truly worship God with no pretense, but with transparency and a sincere heart. The same God, who asked the woman at the well for a drink of water, is asking you the same question: will you give me a drink; will you pour out your praise and worship on me? I don’t need anything from you, but I desire your affection. I desire your devotion. This passage implies that every single person is important to Him. Even, the lowly person, such as the woman at the well, is refreshing to Him.
Today, that same beautiful name, that same Jesus, is calling you to worship and give Him all the bitter things in your life. Give Him all your guilt, all your shame. You don’t have to live with it any longer. ‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.’ I have come to take your drink, your punishment, your burden, and exchange it and offer you this living water.
John 4:10 (NIV): Jesus answered her, ‘If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water’.
This living water, Christ, is present in everyone of us. He will cause us never to thirst again. He will cause us to be satisfied. This living water becomes a gushing fountain… – Sonja Kleynhans
